Losing a friend can be a very traumatic experience.  There are many books that help you thru the process of grieving and understanding this proces.

Cold Noses At The Pearly Gates

There are no words that can fill the emptiness we feel with the loss of a precious companion pet. Their unconditional love and devotion are missed as much as their splendid and unique personality. But we can replace the grief with joyful anticipation and hope, if we understand that there is a plan for them. The words of this book are offered to guide you to that place. You may begin reading as a skeptic, but you will end with a newfound hope and a lot of important things to think about.

In June of 2008, we lost our precious dog, Nelson, to brain cancer.  Nelson had been a loving pet and Willie's best friend/brother for 10 years.  On a day that we will never forget, our vet came to our home to end our days with Nelson, where he passed surrounded by people who loved him and his brother.  The saddness was overwhelming and hours of saddness turned to days of saddness that we seemed to not be able to escape.  So....we packed up Willie and a few belongings and headed to downtown Nashville to the Loew's Hotel.

We stayed two nights at the Loew's Hotel and found ourselves searching, spontaneously, for anything we could do with Willie.  The hotel, being pet friendly, provided us with a complementary pet gift which included treats, food and other items Willie loved.  The experience we had was inspirational and uplifting, even in our deep saddness, as people we did not know would stop and talk to us and love on Willie.  We had conversations with hotel staff, restaurant staff, business travelers staying at the hotel (those away from home missing their own puppies)...just about everyone.  After which, we realized, perhaps, we would not have ever had these conversations if Willie, our precious Willie, was not with us.

As a result of this experience, we realized what a special element Willie added to our travel experience.  We realized that travel, even in you own town, takes on a whole new life when you are there with your dog.

Planting a tree in honor of your lost pet.

Losing your dog can be a traumatic and a very painful experience. Our dogs are a valued member of our family and in some cases a best friend.  Letting go can be very difficult.  In addition to creating a memory book, another way to keep your friend's memory alive is by planting a pet memorial tree.

A pet memorial tree is a gift you can purchase in honor of a deceased pet from a tree organization. One such organization is called Trees for Change. They plant trees as gifts in the U.S. National Forests that have been destroyed by wildfire. For $35 or less, a pet owner or compassionate friend can purchase the planting of a tree, card and envelope with a personal message, and online registry. So, as you show respect for a lost pet, you also help save the earth.  Also, if you know someone who has recently lost a friend, this is a great way to express your thoughts for them.  This service will send a card with a personal message or memory and an explanation of the tree planting.

For more information on pet memorials, visit Trees for Change. Considering all of the ways you can honor the life of a beloved four-legged friend, this is a wonderful way.
